O conceito foi criado na segunda metade do século XX para se nomear os canais ou veículos de comunicação não tradicionais, ou seja, canais de divulgação sem conteúdo editorial, apenas com viés comercial. Nessa perspectiva tudo que não fosse jornal, revista, rádio ou televisão passou a ser denominado de mídia alternativa, conotação que infelizmente tornou-se depreciativa por conta de um consenso ( baseado em pesquisas não conclusivas) no sentido de que essas formas de mídia eram apenas complementares. Cunhou-se até a expressão “mídia básica” para caracterizar que às “mídias alternativas” cabia, apenas, o refugo da verba publicitária.&lt;br /&gt;Tinha sentido essa descriminação no contexto de época. Já que o marketing recomendava a mídia de massa como a melhor estratégia. As grandes empresas não cogitavam ainda “targets” específicos, o seu público alvo era a massa como um todo e, nessa perspectiva, é claro que nenhuma mídia alternativa cumpria esse objetivo. Então mídia alternativa passou a ser, também, sinônimo de pequenas audiências ou de índices de leitura limitados. De modo que veículos tradicionais como o jornal, porém segmentados (de bairro, culturais, políticos, de reparação, etc) passaram a ser considerados também alternativos.&lt;br /&gt;O conceito de comunicação integrada e a expansão do mix do marketing tradicional resgatou o valor da mídia alternativa, mas não lhe tirou o rótulo pela impossibilidade prática de se nomear pelo menos uma centena de opções de mídia, paralelo às quatro tradicionais aqui referidas. O fato é que hoje algumas mídias alternativas atingem milhões de pessoas, a exemplo das listas telefônicas ou do outdoor, concorrendo de igual para igual, no critério audiência ou índices de leitura, com os grandes jornais e até emissoras de televisão vice-líderes. Também chamada "Mídia Digital Out of Home", é aquela que se utiliza de monitores instalados em locais de grande circulação de pessoas, como shopping centers, restaurantes, hipermercados, elevadores, ônibus, trens, táxis e outros.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;No Brasil, esse mercado movimentou mais de R$ 30 milhões de reais em 2007 e com um crescimento projetado de mais de 100% chegou a R$ 73 milhões em 2008. Sentindo a necessidade de organização, 13 empresas do setor organizaram-se para criar a ABDOH - Associação Brasileira de Mídia Digital Out of Home, fundada em junho desse ano.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;O presidente da ABDOH, Waltely Longo, afirma que “O surgimento desses novos meios de comunicação que integram a categoria de mídia digital out of home é a resposta que o mercado esperava para reconquistar a atenção do consumidor, por meio da anunciantes. De olho justamente no aumento da demanda pela chamada audiência qualificada, a RealGames - divisão de jogos casuais da empresa americana Real Networks - realizou uma pesquisa com 1.500 internautas para avaliar a aceitação dos entrevistados em assistir publicidade veiculada em games. Os resultados deram conta que 90% dos jogadores concordam com a veiculação de propaganda em formato streaming vídeo desde que antes ou durante as pausas naturais dos games - enquanto baixam o arquivo, por exemplo - e em troca do acesso gratuito aos títulos. Mais da metade deles também disse preferir inserções publicitárias que estejam ligadas diretamente a entretenimento como informações sobre cinema ou música. Produtos relacionados a cuidados com os cabelos e pele, limpeza doméstica e perda de peso também foram destacados e aparecem nesta ordem de preferência. "Dentro da RealGames (antiga Atrativa) registramos um aumento de 300% na demanda por propaganda dentro dos games no ano passado. Para atender a necessidade dos anunciantes desenvolvemos formatos diferenciados que não atrapalham o usuário e de quebra o envolve no momento em que está mais relaxado e aberto a essas inserções", comenta Fernando Tassinari, diretor comercial da RealGames no Brasil. Entre os pesquisados, 81% são mulheres, sendo que 65% delas têm entre 35 e 64 anos. Diante da evolução do setor e com 35% de sua receita gerada por publicidade, a RealGames planeja para esse ano realizar uma expansão significativa no número de títulos que já estejam habilitados para a exibição de propagandas. Hoje são cerca de 40 jogos neste formato. "A combinação correta de publicidade dentro dos nossos games nos oferece maior flexibilidade para fornecer opões avançadas de entretenimento aos nossos clientes. Desta forma é possível dividir a renda adicional com os desenvolvedores de jogos e oferecer aos anunciantes um retorno competitivo sobre o investimento", acredita Tassinari. Segundo estudo do Yankee Group, o mercado global de propagandas em games movimentou US$ 77,7 milhões em 2007 e a expectativa é que o setor movimente cerca de US$ 971,3 milhões até 2011. "Assim como acontece na internet, a propaganda em games é totalmente mensurável e gera uma taxa de clique bastante significativa. A tendência é que cresça consideravelmente nos próximos anos", diz Tassinari. "Estima-se que cada usuário gaste até cinco horas por mês com jogos pelo computador.
